Why only adult men are Kabuki dancers

There is sometimes unexpected history that explains structures...

From The art of japanese print 'Initially Kabuki troupes consisted of men dressed as women and women dressed as men. But many of the women dancers supplemented their earnings by selling their sexual favours. The authorities cracked down. To prevent Kabuki being merely a front for prostitution, the women's parts were taken over by young boys. This, however, produced similar problems and eventually mature men ended up taking all the parts.'
